Decadence Decayed
These cars were very exclusive when they were new and as such their desirability today is far from universal. Cars that were much more common, and affordable, have enjoyed greater appreciation by a wider audience which has been reflected in their values. For example, a Ford Escort RS1600 could set you back as much as £80,000 today, impressive for a car that cost less than £2400 when it was new. Car markets are largely driven by our base desires; cars that we connect with, cars that we lust after, cars that can capture our imagination or cars that are truly special and unique. This is why, in today's market, a humble 1974 Ford Escort is far more desirable than the high status Bentley. Not only are Mk1 Escorts more desirable but their values are now greater than their costs which is far from the case for the Bentley. And thus, there comes a point in every (post Cricklewood) Bentley's life when abandoning it in a hedge becomes the most sensible thing to do.
